The snare drum is a part of the kit capable of the most individual expression; the tone and distinct characteristics of each unique drum have the power to alter the timbre and overall sonic landscape of a tune more than any other drum. As snare drums have paid dues to changing musical fashion, so each era has spawned drums by various manufacterers that are in vogue.
Here you will find a snapshot of my ever-changing personal collection; some familiar classics and some rare beasts too!

Premier 1939 Model Snare Drum
When I started collecting drums, my pocket often wouldn't stretch to the most coveted models; over the years, I have ended up with quite a unique collection of oddballs and rarities! If you you aren't trying to recreate the drum sound of a particular era or genre, let me listen to your song and recommed a drum that I think speaks well within the music. Each one of my drums has a unique peronality and when paired with the right microphone, will sound awesome!
Snare drums are manufactured in a vast array of materials and diemsions; the number of tension lugs and the choice of drum head, type of wires and tuning techniques as well as dampening techniques all contribute to the overall sonic qualities of the drum even before we get to the drum sticks, the valocity of the strike and the unique style of the drummer - all of this can offer endless possibilites to create new and interessting sounds!
While it is possible to experiment with drum set-up and tuning, I know my collection really well and can quickly select a drum based on your brief. Maybe you're looking for a Jeff Porcaro piccolo snare "crack", a zonky Gene Krupa rim shot, a Nate Smith dead "blap"... I know where to start the search for the perfect sound!
